‘You’ve got to be kidding me’. Those were the same exact words that ran across my mind when the food was served. At the price they were offering, I knew they would be skimming on the portion size but I did not expect them to go the extreme. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a blog post about my experience at El Meson and its voucher.

I am sure you aware of the density of group buying sites that are available right now. And I am sure most of you had a fair share of the buying spree due to its irresistible deals. Well, I did purchase a couple of times from various sites due to my itchy hands. One of them was this deal by El Meson (sold through Groupon) whereby for RM15 (a 53% discount of RM32), one get to choose either their famous The Ultimate Pork Burger (Pork, bacon, mushroom and cheese burger with homemade fried potatoes) or Classic Minute Steak (Aussie rib eye minute steak with chunky fries). Click here to see the deal.

Good deal, ain’t it? Well, I was eager to try them years ago every since I heard and read good stuff about their pork burger and bla bla bla. And when this deal came up, it was no brainer at all as it was the opportunity to try them. Google them and you get to see photos of them all.

Iced Cappuccino

After all the delaying, reservation was made at the very last minute. I got to give credits to them as they extended the redemption period for another 2 weeks due to popular demand.

To sum it all up, small pathetic portions aside, the meal was alright. The so-called ‘Ultimate’ Pork Burger could be better if they did not skim on the toppings, like what I saw from other blogs and websites. The bacon was pathetically small and the sliced mushrooms can hardly made up to one complete button mushroom. The burger resembled somewhat a quick, sloppy job. The good thing was the pork patty itself; well seasoned and perfectly dense. The less-than-5-millimeter-thick minute steak was sightly chewy even though I asked for it to be cooked medium. I could imagine it would be tough as rubber if I opted for medium well. The Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms were decent; filled with minced beef and topped with melted cheese. But for the price of RM18, I would think twice if I were to order them again. The Iced Cappuccino RM10) was just below par. If my guess is correct, the portion would not be the same like this if you pay in full. For RM15 a pop, I guess I should not have set any expectations at all. Oh well…

  1. yikes, i have a friend who recently bought a 50-percent-off deal for el meson’s breakfast set. here’s hoping his set won’t be too badly downsized, but after reading this, i guess he should be bracing himself for the possibility…

  2. Sad to hear of your experience. We’ve also stopped buying so many discount vouchers for food already, because we realize either the food isn’t good, or the portions are downsized. I nearly bought this one actually! Thankfully I didn’t..heh

  3. Oh shit, I just bought their deal of breakfast set >.<

  4. Sean : I doubt they can downsize any more for the breakfast set. Nevertheless, it’s best for him to keep his expectation low. Hehe.

Choi Yen : Haha! Good luck? I almost bought them too but their photos didn’t look like it’s worth it.:P

Adam : I’d usually go for the well-known restaurants. The last one I bought was buffet by Grand Millennium. It was good. This, however, was below expectation.

  5. Skimming the size because its a “discount” buy is not acceptable even if food is good…Gosh when will eateries ever learn to be honest? Have had quite a few disappointments even with bigger establishments…I am almost giving up on group buys for food vouchers.

  6. missyblurkit : Absolutely. This is my first time purchasing vouchers for a single meal/dish. My previous purchase was a hotel buffet, which I thought was quite worth it. I guess they are trying to attract more customers but failing to do it the right way.

  7. Had similar experience with voucher redemption. Portion still remain the same for my case, but unfortunately the quality was bad. Even photos advertised on the voucher page did not tele with what we had. But I guess these situations are unavoidable.

  8. Cheryl : Cutting cost, perhaps.
