In Ipoh – Hong Kee Mah Chee 芳记麻芝

Hong Kee Mah Chee, Pasir Panji Ipoh

This unassuming stall is, perhaps, my favourite place for a good bowl of peanut soup/paste/cream (a.k.a. fa sang wu in Cantonese). And this comes from a person who does not fancy such dessert at all.

What sets them apart from others (for me at least) is its adequately creamy yet fragrant concoction with slight saltiness that hits the tastebuds at the very end. It is made/cooked daily to ensure freshness of the product. It’s not overly sweet like others or overly rich to the point of feeling cloyed. The price for one (bowl) is RM2.50.

Oh… they do sell mah chee (mua chee in Hokkien) too! Perhaps, it is their main business since the stall’s name says it all. These soft, chewy yet firm glutinous rice balls were moreish! They were coated with perfect mixture of freshly grounded peanuts, sesame seeds and sugar. A portion like this costs RM2.50, which I think it is slightly pricey.

  1. Omg, I love fa sang wu, but you don’t really get good ones in KL anymore. That one up there looks the colour of milk tea! o_O Also love mah chee so will jot this down for if I ever go back to Ipoh with Adam. Thanks for sharing!

  2. oh, i’m usually not a fan of peanut cream either, cos i find them often too artificial-tasting. the one here sounds good though, if you can taste a palpable nuttiness in it! :D

  3. The Yum List : Hhmm… you can give it a try and tell me what you think. :)

Wendy : Yeah. Most of them in Klang Valley are watered down or just don’t taste right. Do try them out if you are in Ipoh!

Sean : I don’t really like them because of the cloyed feeling. But this one just taste right.

suituapui : Those balls are chewy! While the soup is creamy, sweetish-saltish.

Melissa : Yup. Either the stall is selling various types of desserts or none at all. Too much hassle to make them, perhaps.
