In Penang – Brown Pocket, Gurney Paragon

This place needs no introduction. It is pretty well known by now for its aesthetic decoration and food/desserts. Whether the food is good (or worth the money) or not, I guess it’s up to one’s preference.

We were only there because we were killing time as well as to rest before our next food hunt. Fascinated by the whole simplistic concept and comfy chairs, we were drawn into it in no time. I particularly liked the whole ‘natural light’ ambiance which worked well for this café.

Although we had to place our order at the counter and the food being served to our table later on, this café practiced self-service… with service charge charged. Mind baffled? Me too.

The menu was extensive but it didn’t really cover the entire dessert forte. Spoilt for choices with light meal in mind (so we could gorge on our next food stop), we opted for Triple Chocolate Waffle (RM14.50) and a jar cup of Kiwi Orange juice (RM11.90) to share. Water was provided for free with some really odd but unique glasses.

It did take a while for them to arrive but it didn’t matter to us as we could really make full use of the… chair and air conditioning. The waffle arrived with three mini canisters containing three types of chocolate (dark, milk and white). It looked pretty and all but I wished the waffle could be bigger as the ratio (to the ice cream) was slightly disproportionate. The waffle was crisp on the outer layer but slightly doughy in between. Nevertheless, it was all good to go with the ice cream and chocolate sauces.

The juice was wee bit too sour but it’s drinkable. Maybe it was due to the sweet endings of the waffle which screwed my tastebuds.

Not sure what the ambiance and service would be like when the café is packed, but overall, when we were there, it was pretty cosy and quiet. In fact, there were only two occupied tables and one of them was ours. Truth to be told, I am not sure if it’s worth the price for the waffle (but definitely not for the juice), but I guess part of it went to the given place, space, ambiance and experience.
