Although we slept rather late after the midnight movie, we woke up early to prepare ourselves for a full day ahead. By 10AM, we have already checked out of the hotel, loaded our bags into the car boot and began our food hunting session.

Eng Loh Coffee Shop

Our first meal of the day was at Eng Loh Coffee Shop. Located along Church Street (Lebuh Gereja), this coffee shop is famous for its breakfast set meals. Looking for parking spot was a nightmare as parking lots were limited. It didn’t help either when the streets / roads were one-way direction. It took us quite a while to look for a parking lot before we decided to do it Malaysian style; i.e. create one if there’s none available. Hehe.

Drinks

Apart from the usual noodles and rice, the shop does serve some good ol’ toast, half boiled eggs as well as simple western breakfast. We were there for their famed Roti Taiwan.

Roti Taiwan

For RM3.40, Roti Taiwan is essentially a thick toast (roti Benggali) layered with creamy peanut butter and margarine and finished off with chunky chopped peanuts on top. It tasted rather good as the sweet and salty combination worked really well with soft fluffy toast.

Half Boiled Egg and Toast

Other than the Roti Taiwan, we ordered half boiled eggs on toast and a bowl of hokkien mee (from another stall). Priced at RM3.00, the toast was alright as the eggs were cooked perfectly. A dash of pepper and soy sauce (optional), it is good to go. Unknowingly, my friend opted for rice vermicelli (bee hoon) and instant noodles instead of the normal yellow noodles. A first for me as I’ve never had this weird combination of noodles before. Nevertheless, the hokkien mee was alright although the broth was lacked of flavour and less spicy than I would like it to be. A normal bowl costs around RM3.50.

Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee)

Since we parked in unconventional parking spot, we spent about 30 minutes or so, eating our breakfast while on the lookout for local authorities, before we left the coffee shop. We didn’t really stuff ourselves crazily as the day was still early and we were barely quarter way through our food hunting plan.

Kafe Khoon Hiang

We still had a couple of hours to spare before our next check-in time (for another hotel in George Town) and hence, we made our way to the next stop; Kafe Khoon Hiang. That’s where the famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow (CKT) stall is located at. Due to the long yet busy stretch of Jalan Dato’ Keramat, getting to this place wasn’t easy. From George Town, it took us a good 25 minutes or so we before we were able to reach to the destination, even with the help of GPS. Without it, we would probably spend more time searching for it as we had no clue where the location was or how it looked like.

Ah Leng Char Koay Teow Stall

Besides the CKT stall, there were other food stalls in the coffee shop as well. But then again, most of the customers we saw that day were there for a good plate of CKT. Heh!

Char Koay Teow

Since we were there early (before the lunch crowd), the waiting period was not that long as we waited for about 20 minutes for our orders to arrive. Priced at RM5.00 for a normal plate, we ordered two plates of CKT; one with duck egg (with extra charge of RM0.50) and the other with chicken egg.

Char Koay Teow Prawns

Unlike the measly prawns we usually get in Kuala Lumpur, both plates arrived with big fat juicy prawns as shown in the photos. Like any good plate of CKT, it has the needed wok hei – an essentially component for CKT – as it was fried nicely without making it too dry or oily. Sinful, hearty and tasty, we loved the one with duck egg compared to the other. The presence of duck egg somehow adds more flavour to the dish.

Char Koay Teow

Nonetheless, we cleaned our plates in no time. It’s safe to say that this is the best CKT I’ve ever eaten so far. I was told (or read somewhere) that we have the option to add extra ingredients such as mantis prawns but we didn’t do so this round. I guess we have more reasons to go back to Penang for another round. Hehe.
