Over the weekend (before Christmas), my hands itched for something to play. Add on this, I’m starting to pick up photography as my past time thingy.
Hence, I got this;
I’m very satisfied with my spending because it produces great pics for its price tag (RM 1,320) as I couldn’t afford Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L. Well, what can I say, the build is there (better than my useless Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS) and most importantly, the f is 1.4 which I craved for as I mostly take portraits and food pictures in low light conditions. It has USM (Ultrasonic Motor) in it and hence, the autofocus is pretty fast and very silently. Besides, it produces excellent bokeh (blurred background) shots.
I shall let the pictures speak for itself;
Updated with more pictures;
You might wonder, where the heck are portrait shots? Well, I did spam alot (of portrait shots) during Christmas Eve party, but I’m not a fan of showing pictures of my family. So, I apologize for that in advance.
By comparison, it works well when f is at 2.8 and above for portrait shots as the DOF is pretty shallow for f below that value.
Looks like this lens is gonna be on my Canon EOS 40D body for a very very very long time (maybe permanent :P ). I’ll keep my kit as my spare lens.
note to self : stop spending so much for year 2008…!!
Ah, I wanted to buy that when I was buying my camera. However, after spending on the body, I didn’t have the budget for this anymore. I ended up buying the F1.8 instead.
Its nice, but I don’t like the plastic/toy feeling of it. Bleargh. Gonna change it when I have the money.
By the way, what camera are you using?
400D? 40D?
And are you Goliath in ShutterAsia? :P
I was in the same condition as you too. But thinking of it, I would love to keep my lens longer than intended to. So, I’ve to squeeze out more cash for f/1.4 instead of f/1.8. Hehe.
I’m using 40D.
And, yeap. :)
Food picture with this, isn’t that ideal, as the minimum focusing distance is 0.45m for my F1.8, not sure about yours though. I reckon the kit lens is much better as its 0.35m. Heh!
I am using 40D as well, but with 17-85mm IS kit lens. :D
Yeap. Ain’t that ideal unless the food is at decent length away from the lens. Should be same as yours. But I think it is alright as I don’t have to go up close to snap it. I don’t want people to stare at me with one look. Haha
As for your kit lens, not bad eh.. I wanted to get the same as yours but $$$ prob.. :P
Damn weird right? You have money to buy F1.4 but not enough to get the better kit lens. LOL. The kit lens would be a better investment than the F1.4 if you ask me.
LOL. I know I know. Well, there’s a long story to it. But in short, maybe because I can’t get the shots that I want with my kit lens initially (based on low light condition and portrait shots). So, I’ve to dug out extra $$$ from my other ‘reservoir’. My budget was just enough for the 18-55mm kit lens.
Heck, I didn’t even wanna get DSLR in the first place. My initial target was Canon Powershot S5 IS. But thanks to some excellent brainwashing, the rest is history. LOL
nice investment, and btw, is that a Prime Lens?
Thanks. And yeah, it is a prime lens :)
