There are undoubtedly more than a handful of good char kuey teow stalls in Penang. And there is no denying that each individual has his/her own favourite stall. I personally have tried a few famous ones and although it is unfair judgement to make, I myself have a favourite stall and that is none other than Ah Leng Char Kuey Teow at Kafe Khoon Hiang.
Their opening hours are usually during the day time but when I found out that they operate in the night too at other location, there are very few words to describe my joy because now, I can have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! A lil overkill, I know. LOL!
It is said that this stall is operated by the originator and it is situated along Lorong Zoo 6 in a quiet neighbourhood. Getting to this place is kinda tricky but it should not be a problem if you have a smartphone with Google Maps installed or even better, a GPS unit.
As usual, a normal plate with (or without) egg will set you back RM6 (or RM6.50). If you’re feeling greedy like me on that day, you can opt for a special version which will cost RM10. To up the flavour, do request for duck egg instead. A special plate like this has 4 large fresh juicy prawns with a few strips of mantis prawns. Whether they (mantis prawns) helped the flavour, I can’t really comment but what I do know is that it was heavenly… especially when it’s fried with duck egg! There are no sliced lap cheongs (Chinese sausages) which I don’t really mind since I don’t fancy its taste and texture.
So, there you have it. If you are craving for a good sinful plate of Char Kuey Teow at night, do head to this place. They are open for business from 6PM to 1030PM daily except on Wednesdays… although we tried going there on Friday night and they were closed.
